The View From Here

Everyone writes from somewhere. This is where I write from.

Not a neutral vantage, not the view from nowhere — a particular hill, a particular window, a particular set of loves and arguments I keep having with myself. The View From Here is my attempt to say what the world looks like from this spot, and to do it honestly enough that you might recognise your own view in it, or push back on mine.

Mostly it comes down to three things I can't stop thinking about: the stories we love, the books we read, and the strange, stubborn life of the Church.

What you'll find here

Hot takes on Middle-earth. I love Tolkien too much to be precious about him. So expect arguments — that Sam is the real protagonist, that the Scouring of the Shire is the whole point, that Tom Bombadil is a feature and not a bug, that the films got Faramir badly wrong. Some of these takes are warm. Some are spicy. All of them are offered in the spirit of a good pub conversation that runs three hours too long.

Book reviews. Not the dutiful kind. I read widely and write about what a book actually did to me — where it landed, where it lied, what it changed. Fiction and theology, the new release and the old classic I finally got around to. If a book is worth your hours, I'll try to tell you why. If it isn't, I'll try to tell you that too, kindly.

Culture and the Church. This is the harder, closer writing. I'm interested in how faith actually meets the world we live in now — not the culture war version, but the real texture of belief, doubt, beauty, and belonging. Where the Church is getting it right, where it's losing the plot, and what it might look like to live faithfully and generously in a moment like this one.

Why it's worth reading

I'm not aiming for hot-take churn or the tidy answer. I'd rather be honest than clever, though I'll take clever when I can get it. The through-line across all three lanes is the same conviction: that stories matter, that attention is a form of love, and that the things we give our attention to end up shaping who we become.
